On average, a child care provider in the state of Alaska earns $17.92 per hour. Professionals in preschool and Head Start programs have higher average wages compared to those who work in school-age programs, centers, and family child care homes. Professionals in family child care earn the least amount of money on average ($16.26 per hour). Similarly, administrators in preschool and Head Start programs earn more than their counterparts in other program types. For example, an administrator in a preschool program earns $46.50 on average, compared to a center-based administrators who earns $25.36 per hour on average.

Hourly Wages of the Child Care Workforce in Alaska Compared to the Living Wage

According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, the living wage for 1 adult with no children in the state of Alaska is $23.26 per hour. Yet, many individuals in the child care workforce earn less than this living wage. The following is a breakdown of the percent of the child care workforce who earn less than living wage by role type.

  • 96% of center-based assistants earned less than this living wage benchmark.
  • 92% of home-based providers earned less than this living wage benchmark.

Average Hourly Wages of the Child Care Workforce Based on Highest Education Level Obtained

Overall, having a higher degree did not result in substantially higher hourly wages for the child care workforce in Alaska. While those with a high school diploma or GED earned an average hourly wage of $20.89, those with a graduate degree only earned two dollars per hour more, on average ($23.76).

Average Hourly Wages of the Child Care Workforce by Career Ladder Level

The Alaska SEED workforce registry developed a career ladder for child care professionals to track their progress when obtaining education or professional development. The career ladder outlines steps one through twelve, with twelve being the highest level of related training or higher education pathways an individual can reach.

For the most part, higher career ladder level means higher average hourly wages for the child care workforce in Alaska. Child care professionals on step 1 of the career ladder made an average hourly wage of $16.93, while those on steps 10 and higher made over $25 per hour on average.

Hourly Wages of the Child Care Workforce Among Different Races and Ethnicities

Those who identified as Asian, Alaska Native, and White had slightly higher wages compared to other races and ethnicities. The differences between these three groups and the other races and ethnicities in the dataset ranged between $1 to $2 per hour. For example, child care professionals who identified as Asian made an average hourly wage of $19.33, while those who identified as Multi-Racial made an average of $17.76 per hour.

Percentage of Respondents Who Reported That Their Programs Offer Benefits

Regardless of program or role type, the most common benefit offered by child care programs were paid holidays and paid time off. Over 42% of child care professionals in Alaska reported that their programs offer these benefits. Family child care homes were the least likely to offer benefits to their employees. Only 2% of professionals in family child care homes reported that their program offered health insurance, compared to 41% of professionals working in a center.
